Mental Health Awareness Week 2019
This week (13th May – 19th May) is Mental Health Awareness Week. On this week each year, people and companies around the country will recognise and talk openly about mental health and wellbeing.
Prioritising people is one of the pledges we've made here at Extentia Group, and a key part of that is to give our colleagues the support and resources they need to stay healthy and well, both physically and mentally.
Throughout the week, we have been delivering a series of campaigns to increase awareness to our colleagues. Here’s a round-up up of some of the great things we have been up to.
Time to Change Pledge
Earlier this week, our CEO, Tony Lenehan, signed the Time to Change Pledge – an employer pledge demonstrating a commitment to changing how we think and act about mental health in the workplace.
Prioritising people is one of the pledges we have made here at Extentia Group, and a key part of that is to give our colleagues the support and resources they need to stay healthy and well, both physically and mentally.
At the beginning of the year we partnered with Hero Wellbeing – a service and technology company that helps businesses create a successful employee wellbeing programme with a focus on all types of healthy behaviour.
The exciting partnership will provide Extentia Group with ongoing support such as mental health first aid training for our wellbeing champions across the business, and also access to the full Hero Navigator platform, enabling employees to drive and control all areas of their health including nutrition, physical activity and mental health and wellbeing.

Talking Mental Health Onsite
This week, our Responsible Business Lead, Alex Mayes, joined the projects team on one of our construction sites in Manchester for a Toolbox Talk on mental health.
Here’s what Alex had to say:
"I'm always keen to spread the message about mental wellbeing in the workplace, and Mental Health Awareness Week enables us to build on messages in other parts of the media, including the construction sector. In the talk we highlighted why men, statistically don't ask for help and support and what we can do to help to reduce the stigma and encourage others to start the conversation."
Mental Health First Aid
On day three of Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re took the opportunity to introduce our new Wellbeing Champions to the business.
This team of colleagues from across the Group who have recently completed Mental Health First Aid training, will be on hand to support colleagues experiencing any mental health issues. The team are passionate about getting people the right support at the right time and dedicated to raising awareness and reducing stigma around mental health.
One of our Mental Health First Aiders comments:
“As an industry, we’re great at understanding the need to train our employees in first aid i.e. what to do if someone has an accident at work, but we’re a long way off in treating mental health the same way. As a health and safety professional, safety is often prioritised and it’s easier to see results, but our mental wellbeing is just as important. This is the first step in making a difference.”
Having trained Wellbeing Champions in place is an effective and sustainable way to make sure the wellbeing agenda remains alive in our business.
The conversation doesn’t stop here...
It may be the end of Mental Health Awareness Week, but the conversation doesn’t stop here. Mental Health can affect anyone at any time and that’s why at Extentia Group we continue to support Mental Health as part of our responsible business agenda all year round.
Remember, its ok to not be ok. You're not alone – talk to someone you trust. Sharing a problem is often the first step to feeling better.

CALM provide a helpline for men in the UK who are down or have hit a wall, who need to talk or find information and support. The helpline is open 5pm–midnight, 365 days a year. They also offer a webchat service between the same hours.
